  2. Chrstine's personal research experiences were really interesting. I think if I were in my doctorate and doing my dissertation I would really struggle with being asked to add or take away from my research project because I would fear it would not longer be "my own." The jelly bean video was enlightening. I loved the group project. I am a collaborative learner and it was nice to get up and be active for a bit. Nice job Christine on this class.

  3. This class was very enlightening. I really had no idea what a researcher had to go through just to organize the data they received. I can see why it takes so much time to complete especially if you are doing it on your on. It was nice to see it in action and to participate in the process.

  4. Wow! Christine put us to work tonight!!! I can't believe how much work she has done with her research. This has shown me that you MUST have a passion for what you're doing because you will be spending a lot of time with the work.

  5. Wow...coding and constant comparison is a crazy amount of work. I have a greater appreciation for the amount of work that goes into a dissertation. It requires a lot of detail and determination. Christine was great. I really enjoyed learning about researching from somebody who is in the thick of it. Thanks for another great class.

    1. I liked hearing from someone who is in the thick of it too. It seems she gave us a real life example of what you have to do. I also learned from her about the importance of narrowing data. More is not always better.

  6. I'll be honest, it was nice to be back in class!! Christine did a great job at combining a real world look at action research along with some clarity on terms and topics that I've been struggling with. I feel much better about theoretical frameworks, validity and reliability. I also LOVED the video about a constant comparative method. Those jelly beans really made the concept easy to understand! Thanks Christine! Great class!!

While finishing up the 2013-14 Action Research study (Sophomores who failed one or more classes and their use of academic interventions within the school day.) it definitely helped hearing about the key components of the methods......simple is better. Also, love the perfect timing of learning about "emic" coding of summarizing comments and concepts. Finally, the coding process....gotta say I kinda dig it, just wish I had more concentrated time to focus on the research. Totally, impressed by Christine's openness with sharing her real process.

    2. The openness and sharing is what I love about our profession the most. I have called teachers and administrators in different districts and states and had an e-mail of their work within a day. It is quite the contrast to other industries. My wife works for an investment company where peers are often viewed as competition and people are (almost) always keeping score.

  10. I really enjoyed seeing how someone organized and sorted through data. My group only made it through a few questions and it was overwhelming and a lot more work than I thought it would be! I liked the class and getting to do something active and hands on.

    1. I agree. I can see how it can feel totally overwhelming. So many of the answers could be interpreted in so many different ways. Many were vague and tough to categorize.

  11. This class was intense! I knew a lot of work goes into action research but to see just a small amount in front of me was a little intimidating. Christine was great and very open about the ups and downs of her process. I'm sure it is hard to be told you have to change your dissertation, even if it is only to make it better! I'm sure I will go through this when I am writing my thesis as well. I have to admit seeing how much goes into a research project as a dissertation made me appreciate only being a master's student!

    1. I agree with you Lisa. It still makes me nervous. What happens if I want to change my mind? Or if I can't find what I want? So many things to consider later.

    2. I think that would be really hard but I wonder if it would also make things easier to have someone who could recognize when you are biting off more than you can chew?

  12. I really enjoyed this class. It started to make me think about my own research and whether a thesis it a good route to take for me. Christine really showed as a lot with regards to coming up with the idea and executing it. I think a really awesome thing was knowing when the step back and say that something was too big. She did that with her interviews and decided that they weren't going to happen. Thank you! I look forward to more researchers in the future giving us a glimpse into their brain.

    1. I was also thinking about my question as well, Christine allowed us to be part of the process as well. Having a narrow focus helps with the research.

  13. I apologize for missing class on the 29th. I had my school’s 8th grade promotion and program to attend. My students performed a Gilligan’s Island spoof that was very entertaining.
    I have just finished watching the AMS recording and I am really disappointed that I missed this! I have several hours of interview transcripts to wade through and I will need to do some coding to make sense of it. I have been putting it off as this part of the research process feels a bit like drinking from a fire hose. It looks like you guys had a great time!

  14. I really enjoyed this class. It was great to see the process Christine is going through for her dissertation. Again, it was emphasized how important it is to narrow your topic when doing research. I wish we had more time to organize the responses she collected from her survey and have more discussion with it. See you all on Tuesday!

  16. As I read everyone's post the thread that resonated with me was an instructional one. As graduate students, we are disciplined to be in classes for extended amounts of time and are still able to give our "best selves". With that being said, everyone seemed genuinely excited at the opportunity to be out of our chairs, moving around and collaborating with our peers. When you add a structured environment to that and a learning target you can get a highly engaged student body that is actively participating in their own learning. What a great model!

  17. Class was very interesting; it was great to see the research process in action. Coding is a lot of work and time consuming. Things to keep in mind: constant comparison, groups or themes, pre-test survey questions for relevance and clarity, data collection-the simpler the better, critique literature, ask questions, and don't be afraid to take risks.
