  2. Initially I was intimidated by all this technology however I am quickly finding it's making my life much easier! I look forward to working with all of you. I'm a little worried about APA because I don't know if I have ever written in that form. I am going to a Restorative Justice training on Friday so for those of you interested in that topic I will be sure to share. See you on Thursday!

    1. The APA formatting has me a little worried as well! We can do this!! I am excited to hear about your learnings from your training.

    2. There are plenty of online resources to help you with APA format. I used to be scared by this as well.

    3. Solina - I love APA format. If you ever need some guidance let me know. I also use the Purdue Owl to help me when I get lost.

    4. Good call Earl...love the Purdue Owl site for APA.

I was also very worried about the technology part, I am not very tech savvy at all! I am feeling much better now after Tuesday's class and also after seeing how smoothly it is all running!

    6. APA format just takes a little getting used to! There are a lot of good online resources. The OWL at Purdue is a great one! There's also Citation machine, that's a helpful one too.

  3. You might find this helpful.

There are two general types of data. Quantitative data is information about quantities; that is, information that can be measured and written down with numbers. Some examples of quantitative data are your height, your shoe size, and the length of your fingernails. Speaking of which, it might be time to call Guinness. You've got to be close to breaking the record.

Qualitative data is information about qualities; information that can't actually be measured. Some examples of qualitative data are the softness of your skin, the grace with which you run, and the color of your eyes. However, try telling Photoshop you can't measure color with numbers.

Here's a quick look at the difference between qualitative and quantitative data.
•The age of your car. (Quantitative.)

•The number of hairs on your knuckle. (Quantitative.)

•The softness of a cat. (Qualitative.)

•The color of the sky. (Qualitative.)

•The number of pennies in your pocket. (Quantitative.)

Remember, if we're measuring a quantity, we're making a statement about quantitative data. If we're describing qualities, we're making a statement about qualitative data. Keep your L's and N's together and it shouldn't be too tough to keep straight.

    1. Very well put, this information is very helpful to understand the difference between the two.

    2. Oh my goodness. That is so helpful, Nathan. Thank you!! I'm still struggling with knowing how this would apply to educational research topics but I'm sure we'll figure it out! :)

    3. Love this - I'm coming back to it when I look for articles!

    4. Nailed it! Well done Nathan.

    5. Thank you! I will certainly use this when I am searching for my articles.

    6. Nathan I really like these examples. Basically qualitative is descriptive while if you think of "quan" as a number for quantity "quantitative" is data driven. Thanks!

    7. Glenn also has a nice breakdown of qualitative/quantitative in his folder on dropbox.

  4. 1. Yes, Thomas there will be snacks involved.
    2. I am torn between two topics: Restorative justice as a more effective school discipline model and RTI that works in high schools.
    3. Better dig out my zzusis password.
    4. APA format, double spaced .
    5. Believe Dr. Malone when he says make your research and all assignments relevant to your current and near future job.
    6. Nate and I will be reading each other's papers.
    7. It's going to be a wild ride with WSUP classes and gearing up for graduation. Time management.......sunday afternoons are my best times.

  5. This class was very informative of the expectations of this class. Solina and I were discussing that we are grateful for how flexible this class is especially with this being our first class. I look forward to learning from everyone!

  7. Awesome first class! The technology flowed very well, the quiz was illuminating, and I'm really looking forward to narrowing down my research topic! Go Cougs!

  8. I certainly felt it would be difficult to feel a since of community with all of our fellow students scattered, but I can already tell that my fears are put to rest. I am looking forward to learning from each of you. I definitely have some work to do when it comes to narrowing down my topic of interest. Eek. First critique is due May 22. I will be leaning on the experts in the class who have been through the program some so far. I will bring baked goods upon request!  That is as far as my food skills extend.

    1. I have found that AMS can make it difficult to build community but I think using the technology in the ways that we are will really help. I totally agree with you; I think that our class will be a great learning environment. I am looking forward to our interactions.

    2. I guess that is where learning is heading, where distances are non-existence. I like the fact that we still have a small group in each of the sites where to can talk.

  9. It was great to meet everyone!! My stress level has dropped with the change of the assignments. I am looking forward to Thursday to learn about how we research our interests. All of this technology is great!! I am excited to work with it. Great idea of having our peers review our written assignments. It is always to nice to have someone read your paper before it is turned in.

  10. I am in Pullman and missed class today because the AMS room was locked. It sounds like everyone had a great time. I look forward to eventually meeting everyone on Thursday.

  11. Great first class. Taking a class via AMS will take some getting used to. My biggest take away from class number one will be trying to decide on an appropriate research topic. That could be tough. Looking forward to collaborating with all of you.

  12. I was very concerned about the time crunch involved with this course coupled with the ending of the school year but I think that this course will be very manageable. I am looking forward to working on the literature review as I have been asked to write one a couple of times now, but never as the main feature. Therefore, my past literature reviews did not receive the attention they deserved. I am looking forward to working with the literature in my field as I have come to view a solid foundation within the literature review essential to thinking effectively about research. Looking forward to working with you all!

  13. Thank your for a great first ever masters class!! I am very excited about this new adventure. Also super nervous! You guys were all very welcoming and I am looking forward to working with all of you the next six weeks. I feel much better about all of the different technology pieces in this class as well as the objectives and expectations. I have a lot to do to figure out what I want to research as I am only just beginning to think about it. I hope that tomorrow will help us all to narrow it down. I would like to find a topic that is relevant to what I am doing now as well as a topic that will marketable in the educational system. Looking forward to tomorrow!!

This looks like it is going to be one of the most interactive AMS classes I've taken so far. I am excited to get to know everyone and to narrow down my research topic. I am not very tech savvy and was very nervous to take such a technology full class, but everything seems so easy to navigate so far!

  16. I think that this course will be both challenging and interesting. It puts me a little bit more at ease that Dr. Malone is willing to be flexible. I am a little overwhelmed at how many different pieces go into the technology of this class: the blog, Today’s Meet, dropbox etc. But I think that once I get the hang of it, it will be easier to manage. Also I was unable to get my laptop to connect to the WSU Spokane wifi on Tuesday so I felt a little in the dark.
I think my focus for the article critiques will either be rti and English Language Learners, the SIOP method in the classroom or low-language native English speakers and ELL students. I work with many low language native English speakers now and have found that in some ways they are very similar to ELL students. I am interested in how rti effects ELL students, so I may choose to go with that.

  17. This is going to be a great course. I am feeling more like " I think I can, I think I can." The overview of the blog was very helpful. The use of technology will take some time to get use to it, but it shouldn't be a problem.
